  • Photo of the week for February 22nd to February 28th

    By Geoff | March 2, 2010

It was a great start to the week that ended up becoming the POTW! This past week started with #7 West Virginia visiting UConn at the XL Center in Hartford. UConn pulled out the upset once again. It was a very interesting game with UConn head coach Jim Calhoun receiving a technical foul early in the game and West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins receiving a double technical and being ejected with less than a minute remaining in the game. This upcoming week is another slow one during the week but very busy on the weekend as I have 3 full days of gymnastics in RI.

Onto the Photo of the Week

I’ve always pictured something like this while covering the games, but was never in the right location to make it work. This time it just panned out!

    Nikon D300, 300mm, 2000iso, f2.8/, 1/800th

Always love it when you can get the fans included in the game. They helped decide this one as they really had a good time on national TV and taunting West Virginia.

Photo of the Week for February 15th to February 21st

    By Geoff | February 24, 2010

It was a pretty slow week for me with only one event during the week, but  I made up with it working 39 hours during the weekend, friday into sunday covering a gymnastics meet in Connecticut. Not much to choose from as the weekend work I don’t get to come home with so with that in mind here are my photos of the week.

    Nikon D700, 300mm, 5000iso, f2.8, 1/500th

A pretty interesting hockey game. Short bench on one side and a good sized one on the other. Teams played pretty evenly though!

Photo of the Week for February 8th to February 14th

    By Geoff | February 17, 2010

As planned I am giving some more sports action!! It was a pretty busy sports photography related week for me with some Alpine Ski championships early in the week and the Connecticut Indoor Track Class championships and UConn men’s basketball to finish off the week. Also got some other good news, I was published in ESPN the Mag around November/December (long story) as well as the February 15th issue of Sports Illustrated!!

It was a week of opportunity as well as I was published online at the Home of High School Indoor Track and Field, www.dyestat.com, hopefully this will lead to some more work with them. Considering they are partnered and funded by ESPN RISE it could be quite the opportunity.

This weeks photos come from a sport I don’t photograph often but really love to cover, alpine skiing! There isn’t much for High School races my way let alone it is really easy to catch all of the schools at once in the championships. Considering I pretty much grab all skiers, every school will be covered. Enjoy this weeks photos!!!

    Nikon D300, 300mm, 200iso, f3.2, 1/1600th

This was early in the day, I set up at the next gate down the course and shot up toward this gate trying to get some nice light to the back of the skier. Was a good day over all playing with light.

Photo of the Week for February 1st to February 7th

    By Geoff | February 10, 2010

It was a somewhat slow photography week for myself, winter sports seasons are starting to wrap up which means I slow down for a little period of time. Luckily I have joined up with a few photography outfits that will keep me busy till the beginning of spring season. Also took a short trip to NYC for a corporate portrait assisting gig. Was a fun and enjoyable trip, my car didn’t want me to go but thats a whole other story, in the end I made it and had a great time. Learned a lot from those 2 days, will take it with me for future clients and hopefully some corporate portrait work on my own at some point.

As I stated the week was relatively slow, I had 2 team days for the week and a full weekend of gymnastics. I would be posting some of the gymnastics shots but I don’t get to keep them, let alone considering I took roughly 18000+ shots over the whole weekend I wouldn’t want to go through them all and try to pick a favorite.

Here are a few of my favorite team shots from this past week. Next week I will have some more sports action, I promise!!

    Nikon D700, 28-70 @ 28mm, 400iso, f5.6, 1/100th, SB-800 on flash bracket

The Hudson High School Gymnastics team. A very large group for gymnastics. Had a fun time trying to set them up where it would work out. Of course if I had an apparatus to work with I would have done so but all shots were to be done by the trophy cases, otherwise I would have tried to incorporate the balance beam into the shot.

    Nikon D700, 28-70 @ 28mm, 400iso, f5.6, 1/100th, SB-800 on flash bracket

    Nikon D700, 28-70 @ 42mm, 640iso, f5.6, 1/125th, SB-800 on flash bracket

Two simple basketball team shots. Would love to be able to be creative but we need the basic team shot. Sooner or later I am going to try and have some fun with these team days and come up with some really interesting and fun shoots!!! Time to break away from the norm!

Hope you enjoyed, next week should be on time and with some more sports action, although with this snow storm I might be able to find something else as well!!!

Photo of the Week for January 25th to January 31st

    By Geoff | February 10, 2010

Better late then never right! I am ok with being late when it comes to something like this, definitely not for an assignment. Luckily I am generally early for work but on my blog I see to be a little late some times, but I guess when a photo is taken during the week it really isn’t late right??

Here are a few photos from the week of January 25th to Jan 31st.

Of course as always first is the POTW

    Nikon D700, 70-200 @ 82mm, 640iso, f4, 1/60th

A panning shot done during an indoor track meet that I was not scheduled to be at so I ended up practicing on some panning and other types of photography I don’t generally get to do while on assignment.

Here are a few more from that meet.

    Nikon D700, 70-200 @ 70mm, 1600iso, f5.0, 1/80th

    Nikon D700, 70-200 @ 70mm, 1600iso, f8.0, 1/30th

Also shot the Rutgers vs UConn womens basketball game at the XL Center in Hartford. Here are 2 shots from the game.

    Nikon D700, 70-200 @ 116mm, 2000iso, f2.8, 1/800th

26 January 2010: Connecticut’s Kalana Greene (32) tries to get through Rutgers’s Brittany Ray (35) and Kadijah Rushdan (1) an inbounds play during game action in the first half. Connecticut leads Rutgers 40 – 15 at the half held at XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut.
Mandatory Credit: Geoff Bolte / Southcreek Global

    Nikon D700, 70-200 @ 75mm, 2000iso, f2.8, 1/1000th

26 January 2010: Rutgers’s Kadijah Rushdan (1) shoots through Connecticut’s Maya Moore (23) and Kelly Faris (34) during game action in the second half. Connecticut defeated Rutgers 73 – 36 at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut.
Mandatory Credit: Geoff Bolte / Southcreek Global

It was a fun but little slow week, but I know the next week was even a little slower even if I got to travel a little bit.

Photo of the Week for January 18th to January 24th

    By Geoff | January 26, 2010

It was a great week that started with the Spalding Hoophall Classic in Springfield, MA where 9 of the Top 20 HS teams played a few games and it ended with a UConn upset of then #1 Texas!! I thought I had my POTW picked out before that game, but in the end when an upset like that comes around you are bound to get a POTW from it!! Here is my photo of the week and a few more, and the one I was planning on using before the UConn game came around!!

    Nikon D300, 300mm, 2000iso, f2.8, 1/800th

23 January 2010: Connecticut’s Stanley Robinson (21) hugs Kemba Walker (15) after Walker hit a huge three pointer late in the second half. #21 UConn upset #1 Texas 88 – 74 at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Connecticut.

Photo of the Week for January 11th to January 17th

    By Geoff | January 21, 2010

I am running a little late on this post, luckily it is due to being quite busy. Hopefully this upcoming weeks POTW will be ontime! Had a pretty busy week of gymnastics, indoor track, hockey, skiing and swimming finished the weekend off with basketball. A wide variety of sports packed into a great week. There were some interesting things I ran into, “indoor track” really was indoors. You’ll have to wait to see why!! Anyways on to the Photo of the Week!

    Nikon D700, 300mm, 400iso, f2.8, 1/100th

Had to shoot some panning shots after my job was done as I want to get better for my upcoming ski races as well as NASCAR in the summer.
One more skiing and some indoor track after the break!

Photo of the Week for January 4th to January 10th

    By Geoff | January 11, 2010

First of all Happy New Year!! Can’t believe 2009 is over and 2010 is upon us let alone I missed the last few weeks of POTW! Hoping for a great year and to start it off I shot some great events. Started the year covering the Notre Dame vs UConn mens basketball game, a great game and some great fun. Next up was and AHL game, Bridgeport Sound Tigers vs the Worcester Sharks, a pretty good game.

After the game I had to make sure all my gear was packed and ready for a flight, thats right I was on the move for a little bit. Anyways the next morning I found myself in sunny but somewhat cold Miami Florida. I was there to cover the FedEx Orange Bowl, there are a few shots from the game that will be in this post. Came home on Thursday and went right back to work, had some HS gymnastics. On Friday was a once in a lifetime event, the SunLife Frozen Fenway games. Thats right Hockey was being played at fabled Fenway Park. It was set up as a double header by Hockey East, the first ever womens game outdoors between New Hampshire and Northeastern followed by cross town rivals on the mens side, Boston University and Boston College.

This weeks photo of the week is from the signing of the National Anthem, showing the difference in Fenway Park in the winter as well as an ice rink.

There was some great action from the game although I was shooting from a non-ice level position so I needed to make the most of where I was. I primarily shot from the Green Monster as it game pretty good site lines as well as a good view of about 3/4 of the ice.

    Nikon D300, 300mm w/1.4 teleconverter (420mm effective), 1600iso, f4.5, 1/1000th

08 January 2010: Northeastern goalie Florence Schelling (41) makes the stop before getting scored on the rebound in the third period. The New Hampshire Wildcats defeated the Northeastern Huskies 4 – 3 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.

    Nikon D300, 300mm w/1.4x teleconcerter, 1600iso, f4.5, 1/800th

08 January 2010: Boston College’s Brian Gibbons’ (17) stick bends against Boston University’s Alex Chiasson (9) leg for control of the puck. The Boston University Terriers lead the Boston College Eagles 3 – 1 after the second period at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.

Onto a few shots from the 79th FedEx Orange Bowl held at Land Shark Stadium in Miami Gardens Florida. It was a great game between Iowa and Georgia Tech, and the better team prevailed with Iowa winning 24-14. Here are 2 shots from the game although there are many worthy shots from it.

    Nikon D300, 300mm, 1600iso, f2.8, 1/1250th

05 January 2010: Iowa’s Brandon Wegher (3) stiff arms Georgia Tech’s Derrick Morgan (91) at the FedEx Orange Bowl between #10 ranked Iowa Hawkeyes and the #9 ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets being played at Land Shark Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. Iowa leads Georgia Tech 14 – 7 at the half.

    Nikon D300, 70-200mm @ 160mm, 1600iso, f2.8, 1/800th

05 January 2010: Georgia Tech’s Anthony Allen (18) looks toward the endzone and Iowa’s Jason White (42) during the FedEx Orange Bowl second half between the #10 ranked Iowa Hawkeyes and the #9 ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets being played at Land Shark Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. Iowa defeated Georgia Tech 24 – 14.

Hope you all enjoyed this weeks post, looking forward to the next week and the rest of this year!!

Photo of the Week for December 14th to December 20th

    By Geoff | December 22, 2009

It was a pretty busy week for me this past week lots to choose from and I feel I came out with a good take for the week. Also I feel this POTW is one of my favorites and many of you will know why. I don’t get to shoot track and field often but I do have a great respect for it. I know what it takes to become a great runner, hurdler, high jumper etc. Lots of work and dedication kind of like photography in order to get better you need to put in a ton of work!

On to the Photo of the Week, as I said one of my favorites of the year.

    POTW

    Nikon D700, 70-200mm @ 200mm, 800iso, f2.8, 1/250th, on camera flash

As I mentioned it was a pretty busy week, covered HS swimming twice, HS basketball twice, HS indoor track, HS hockey, a winter choral concert and 2 UConn basketball games. A couple more photos after the break.

Photo of the Week for December 7th to December 13th

    By Geoff | December 15, 2009

Always trying new things is what makes you a better photographer. This past week I was hired to handle a small Dance Recital at a High School for their yearbook. I have shot dance competitions but this is a little different. I shoot a lot of different schools and different things, but this was fun and interesting. Been to a few recitals myself as my sister-in-law dances, although never to one with such horrible lighting! I knew going in it wasn’t going to best lighting as I have shot a few other events in the auditorium it was held. Anyways it was fun and hopefully I’ll be able to do a few more recitals in the near future. For those of you that don’t know about ISO, it is the film speed in a camera, ie 100,200,400,800, that you might have seen on film not too long ago. My D700 has a native 100-6400 iso capability, with it being able to push to 25600. As you can see in some of these images I went over the native capability.

On to the photo of the week.

    Nikon D700, 70-200mm @ 180mm, 8000iso, f2.8, 1/250th

    Nikon D700, 70-200mm @ 180mm, 8000iso, f2.8, 1/250th
