Photo of the Week for January 18th to January 24th
By Geoff | January 26, 2010
It was a great week that started with the Spalding Hoophall Classic in Springfield, MA where 9 of the Top 20 HS teams played a few games and it ended with a UConn upset of then #1 Texas!! I thought I had my POTW picked out before that game, but in the end when an upset like that comes around you are bound to get a POTW from it!! Here is my photo of the week and a few more, and the one I was planning on using before the UConn game came around!!

Had a pretty busy week of gymnastics, indoor track, hockey, skiing and swimming finished the weekend off with basketball. A wide variety of sports packed into a great week. There were some interesting things I ran into, “indoor track” really was indoors. You’ll have to wait to see why!! Anyways on to the Photo of the Week!

Had to shoot some panning shots after my job was done as I want to get better for my upcoming ski races as well as NASCAR in the summer.

Photo of the Week for January 4th to January 10th
By Geoff | January 11, 2010
First of all Happy New Year!! Can’t believe 2009 is over and 2010 is upon us let alone I missed the last few weeks of POTW! Hoping for a great year and to start it off I shot some great events. Started the year covering the Notre Dame vs UConn mens basketball game, a great game and some great fun. Next up was and AHL game, Bridgeport Sound Tigers vs the Worcester Sharks, a pretty good game.
After the game I had to make sure all my gear was packed and ready for a flight, thats right I was on the move for a little bit. Anyways the next morning I found myself in sunny but somewhat cold Miami Florida. I was there to cover the FedEx Orange Bowl, there are a few shots from the game that will be in this post. Came home on Thursday and went right back to work, had some HS gymnastics. On Friday was a once in a lifetime event, the SunLife Frozen Fenway games. Thats right Hockey was being played at fabled Fenway Park. It was set up as a double header by Hockey East, the first ever womens game outdoors between New Hampshire and Northeastern followed by cross town rivals on the mens side, Boston University and Boston College.
This weeks photo of the week is from the signing of the National Anthem, showing the difference in Fenway Park in the winter as well as an ice rink.

There was some great action from the game although I was shooting from a non-ice level position so I needed to make the most of where I was. I primarily shot from the Green Monster as it game pretty good site lines as well as a good view of about 3/4 of the ice.

Onto a few shots from the 79th FedEx Orange Bowl held at Land Shark Stadium in Miami Gardens Florida. It was a great game between Iowa and Georgia Tech, and the better team prevailed with Iowa winning 24-14. Here are 2 shots from the game although there are many worthy shots from it.

Photo of the Week for December 14th to December 20th
By Geoff | December 22, 2009
It was a pretty busy week for me this past week lots to choose from and I feel I came out with a good take for the week. Also I feel this POTW is one of my favorites and many of you will know why. I don’t get to shoot track and field often but I do have a great respect for it. I know what it takes to become a great runner, hurdler, high jumper etc. Lots of work and dedication kind of like photography in order to get better you need to put in a ton of work!
On to the Photo of the Week, as I said one of my favorites of the year.
Nikon D700, 70-200mm @ 200mm, 800iso, f2.8, 1/250th, on camera flash
As I mentioned it was a pretty busy week, covered HS swimming twice, HS basketball twice, HS indoor track, HS hockey, a winter choral concert and 2 UConn basketball games. A couple more photos after the break.

Photo of the Week for December 7th to December 13th
By Geoff | December 15, 2009
Always trying new things is what makes you a better photographer. This past week I was hired to handle a small Dance Recital at a High School for their yearbook. I have shot dance competitions but this is a little different. I shoot a lot of different schools and different things, but this was fun and interesting. Been to a few recitals myself as my sister-in-law dances, although never to one with such horrible lighting! I knew going in it wasn’t going to best lighting as I have shot a few other events in the auditorium it was held. Anyways it was fun and hopefully I’ll be able to do a few more recitals in the near future. For those of you that don’t know about ISO, it is the film speed in a camera, ie 100,200,400,800, that you might have seen on film not too long ago. My D700 has a native 100-6400 iso capability, with it being able to push to 25600. As you can see in some of these images I went over the native capability.
On to the photo of the week.

It was an interesting week of sports for me. Had some great games in college basketball but the best of the week had to be the USF vs UConn night game on Saturday December 5th. It was a perfect December night, snow, wind and a chill in the air! UConn eventually ended up winning 29-27 on a last second field goal. Here are a few shots from that game.

Photo of the Week for November 23rd to November 29th
By Geoff | November 30, 2009
It was a great Thanksgiving meeting up with some aunts and uncles I haven’t seen in a while. Had a somewhat busy holiday as well. Shot a High School football game in the morning of Thanksgiving and finished the weekend off with the WBCA Classic at Gampel Pavilion, Storrs, CT. Home of the UConn Huskies men’s and women’s basketball programs. This weeks POTW week is from the football game due to it being Thanksgiving as well as I’ll probably be posting a lot of basketball in the near future.
On to the Photo of the Week it comes from the Ashland vs Hopkinton Thanksgiving Day football game, Pure determination.

Photo of the Week for November 16th to November 22nd
By Geoff | November 24, 2009
Hard to believe that it is almost Thanksgiving! I hope all of you have a great time with family and friends. I know I will! It was a pretty slow week last week, Figure I only shot 4 days out of the 7. A little abnormal for me but things are picking back up after Thanksgiving, will be covering the WBCA Classic at Gampel Pavilion, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Should also be covering the UConn football game as well.
Since it was a slow week, I only have photos from one day of shooting as I do not personally have anything from the weekend which was a large gymnastics event for a great friend John Cheng and his Team Photo team. I was just one of the guys over the weekend, but took well in excess of 10000 images over the 3 days.
On to the POTW for this week, its all basketball!

Photo of the Week for November 9th to November 15th
By Geoff | November 17, 2009
It was a very slow week shoot wise, but I made the most of it, with covering the UConn womens exhibition on Monday and the BC Hockey game on Sunday. Had some other things as well but are unable to talk about them yet!
The NCAA #1 ranked UConn women played against the NAIA #2 ranked Vanguard Lions, was a pretty good game for both teams. UConn showed what they were made of, and Vanguard looks like they should do very well in the NAIA. As for the hockey, #16 Boston College was playing #15 Vermont, whom BC beat Saturday night 7-1, the final of this one was a little different with it being much closer with Vermont edging out BC 3-2.
Hopefully things will be picking up, I do have somethings in the pipeline but its a wait and see. On to the Photo of the Week.

Photo of the Week for November 2nd to November 8th
By Geoff | November 9, 2009
This was a very interesting week! It was a slow photography week as HS sports and events are slowing down due to the end of season. Had some other corporate events and some college basketball, yes thats right basketball is around the corner! Anyways thats not what made it all interesting. I got a phone call mid week that I was being published!!!! Not just any magazine either, Sports Illustrated!! Yup I got 2 images published in Sports Illustrated page 22 November 9th issue, nothing huge but its a very big first step for me. Hoping for a lot more to come!
On to the POTW!
Nikon D700 300mm, 1250iso, f2.8, 1/640th
Selected this one as the photo of the week as it was a very busy cheer weekend with 10 hours of cheer on Saturday, and then some with the UConn basketball game on Sunday. Also figure I will be posting a lot of Basketball shots in the upcoming POTWs!

And yes the 3 basketball shots are of the same player, just happened that way! I concentrated on him a lot as he was the leading scorer with 32 points, and was just coming off an injury.
